Last week’s Norman High School vs. Norman North basketball gamewasn’t all that remarkable.
That was, untilLainy Fredrickson stepped onto the court…
Lainy, a twenty-one year old special needs student at Norman, Oklahoma’s Norman High School always loved basketball.
However, it hasn’t always been so easy for Lainy to find a welcoming team, interested in adding her to their roster.
Recently, though, high school senior, Brennan Hockett, decided to change all that.
Inspired by her family’s work with the Special Olympics, Brennan developed a new program at her school called, Tiger Teammates.
The program makes participating in school sports much more accessible to classmates with special needs.
As Brennan told Buzzfeed, Lainy has a great personality and great sense of humor. I think people need to realize people with special needs can do everything we can do it just may take them longer or take more explanation.
And last week, Lainy absolutely proved herself on the court.
During the last two minutes of Friday’s game, the Norman High Tigers were nearing victory against their cross-town rivals when who checks in?Lainy.
And, guess what…
She SUNK the game winning shot!
Norman High Tigers WON!
The crowd immediately lost their cool, everyone erupting in joyous cheers.
Lainy’s proud moment completely melted her mom, Mona Fredrickson’s heart.
A lot of times the kids in high school get a bad rap, but the love was overflowing. They were all pulling for her to make that basket, sheexplained.
To see the reaction from the crowd and the rival team they were cheering her on. It was awesome. The girls treat her like one of them. The girls love her, and she loves the girls.
Yes, we’re crying. Our heartscouldn’t be warmer.
